$6.5 billion in public money. Zero accountability.
North Carolina's voucher program sends $6.5 billion in public money to private schools. But those schools don't have to accept your kid. They don't have to keep your kid. They don't have to follow IEPs or 504 plans.
They can turn students away based on disability, religion, or sexual orientation with no explanation. Teachers don't have to be licensed. Background checks are only required for the top administrator, not the staff working directly with your children.
About 90% of voucher recipients were already in private school before they got a voucher. And when the data started looking bad, the legislature stopped tracking it.
Receipts:
Public schools background-check every employee and take every kid who walks in. If we're spending $6.5 billion, the same rules should apply.
Lawmakers literally struck the tracking requirement from the budget.
